Northeast Division patrol members initially responded to an area west of the intersection at 167 Avenue and 59A Street at approximately 1:30 a.m. today, Saturday, March 12, 2016. It was reported to police that a Chevy Cavalier and a Dodge Avenger were westbound on 167 Avenue and approaching an intersection at 59A Street.
It was at that point, where two lanes decrease to one lane, when the Dodge Avenger being driven by a male, allegedly struck the Cavalier from behind at a high rate of speed, sending it spinning into the eastbound lanes where it collided with an oncoming Mitsubishi Lancer.
The lone male passenger in the Cavalier was reportedly thrown from that vehicle, after colliding with the Lancer.
The Cavalier then collided a second time with the westbound Dodge Avenger, before both vehicles came to a stop on a nearby boulevard.
The 27-year-old male passenger of the Cavalier was pronounced deceased on scene by paramedics, following several attempts to administer first aid. The driver of the Cavalier was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries, where he remains in critical condition.
The driver and passenger of the Lancer were taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries. The driver of the Avenger sustained minor injuries.
The investigation is in its preliminary stages, and no charges have been laid at this time.
