The Edmonton Police Service Homicide Section has identified the deceased male who was found Tuesday morning in a burnt-out rental suite near 106 Avenue and 122 Street.

An autopsy was conducted on Wednesday, April 20, 2016 and the Medical Examiner determined that Blair William Schmidt, 30, died as a result of a gun-shot wound.

This is Edmonton’s 18th homicide.

Background:

Just after 5 a.m., April 19, 2016, Edmonton Fire Rescue arson investigators requested the assistance of police at the scene. Due to the extent of the fire damage within the suite, EPS Arson Unit detectives and a forensic identification team were dispatched as a precautionary measure.

At the time of the autopsy police did not initially know the identity of the deceased male and sent physical and clothing descriptions to the media for assistance. On Thursday evening, tips continued to come in to police and crime stoppers that enabled police to confirm who the man was and notify his next of kin.

Anyone who has information about this death is asked to contact the EPS at 780-423-4567or #377 from a mobile phone. Anonymous information can also be submitted to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or online at www.tipsubmit.com/start.htm.
