Police investigating explosion at residence in south Edmonton

An explosion at a home in south Edmonton sent two men to hospital with injuries this evening; the Edmonton Police Service is now investigating.

Police were called to assist Edmonton Fire Rescue Services at a residence near 58 Street and 18 Avenue southwest at approximately 5:35 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 13, 2016 after an explosion in the home was reported.

The cause of the explosion and the circumstances leading to the incident have not yet been determined. It is not yet known if this event is criminal in nature.

Houses in close proximity have been evacuated and a one-block radius around the scene has been blocked off as a precaution. The extent of the damage to the residence where the explosion occurred is still under investigation.

Two men who were in or near the house during the explosion are being treated in hospital for serious, non-life threatening injuries.
