A 30-year-old male suspect is dead, after allegedly fleeing the scene of an earlier hit-and-run collision. It was reported to police on Saturday, Sept. 9, 2017, at approximately 3:45 p.m., that a suspect male driving a silver Ford Freestar minivan was travelling northbound in an alley between 97 Street and 101 Street, when it allegedly struck a blue Dodge Ram1500 travelling eastbound along 116 Avenue.

It is alleged that the driver of the suspect vehicle then fled the scene with the 56-year-old complainant driver of the Dodge Ram 1500 in pursuit.

The suspect male then reportedly drove eastbound down 118 Avenue to 97 Street, before travelling southbound at a high rate of speed.

The suspect driver then reportedly lost control, while swerving to avoid a parked vehicle, before striking a tree, causing him to be trapped inside the vehicle.

Members of the Edmonton Fire Department attended and successfully extracted the suspect male from the van. Paramedics treated and transported the male to hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.

Alcohol and speed are believed to be factors in the fatal collision.

This is Edmonton’s 15th traffic fatality of 2017.
