Collision in industrial area near Henday deemed 30th traffic fatality of 2017

The EPS Major Collision Investigation Unit (MCIU) has completed an investigation into a fatal collision after a male driver allegedly struck a large dirt mound and rolled his vehicle in an empty field just west of Anthony Henday Drive last month.

At approximately 5:30 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 16, 2017, police responded to a single-vehicle collision in the area of Anthony Henday Drive and 109 Avenue. Witnesses allege that a white 2016 Nissan Rogue was travelling southbound on Anthony Henday Drive when it turned westbound onto 109 Avenue and proceeded through a dead end, striking a large mound of dirt and rolling a number of times before coming to a stop on the passenger side.

 

Edmonton Fire Rescue extracted a 74-year-old male driver from the Nissan Rogue, and EMS treated and transported him to hospital with serious injuries that appeared to be non-life-threatening at the time. No other people were injured, and police do not believe alcohol or drugs were factors in the collision.

 

Due to medical complications, the 74-year-old male driver succumbed to his injuries in hospital on Wednesday, Dec. 27, 2017.

 

The collision has been deemed Edmonton’s 30^th traffic fatality of 2017.
