The Edmonton Police Service’s Tactical Response to Auto-theft Prevention (TRAP) team laid several charges this week after its members located a stolen vehicle that had been involved in a criminal flight earlier the same day.

On Wednesday evening, Sept. 19, 2018, in the area of 95 Street and 111 Avenue, the TRAP team located a 2006 Ford F350 that had been reported stolen on Monday.

Upon further investigation, officers determined the stolen vehicle had been involved in a criminal flight earlier that day in Southeast Division.

Officers eventually surrounded the vehicle in the area of 43 Street and 118 Avenue and arrested a female passenger. Themale driver was apprehended with the assistance of EPS Canine Unit after a short foot pursuit.

Upon arrest, the male was found to be in possession of a small quantity of suspected methamphetamine. The female was found to possess a collapsible baton and canister of bear spray. A search of the vehicle also revealed a sawed-off rifle and two large machetes.

Richard Metcalf, 24, is charged with possession of stolen property over $5,000, unauthorized possession of firearm in motor vehicle, unauthorized possession of a firearm, possession of a weapon dangerous to the public (x2), possession of a controlled substance, and breach of recognizance (x3).

Caitlin Dvorak, 21, is charged with possession of a weapon dangerous to the public (x2) and had two outstanding warrants in connection with an assault.

The TRAP team is a specialized unit that specifically addresses city-wide theft of motor vehicles, thereby focusing on the reduction of crime and victimization, while increasing public safety. TRAP launched in March 2017, and between March and December 2017, the team recovered 221 stolen vehicles, made 187 arrests and laid 931 charges. In 2018 to date, TRAP has recovered 185 vehicles worth more than $3.5 million, made 183 arrests, laid 817 charges and recovered 40 weapons.
