At approximately 2:50 p.m. this afternoon, Monday, April 22, 2019, Northwest Division officers responded to the report of a serious collision on Anthony Henday Drive, between 111 Avenue and Yellowhead Trail. It was reported that a motorcycle occupied by two females was heading northbound on Anthony Henday Drive, just passing the 111 Avenue exit when the motorcycle began to slow down behind a Ford F-150 and other preceding traffic. As the motorcycle reduced speed, a Ford Econoline cargo van rear ended the motorcycle at a high speed subsequently pushing the motorcycle forward and ejecting both females from the bike. The Ford Econoline cargo van continued to proceed forward through traffic then striking a Nissan Altima, which was initially in front of the Ford F-150 truck.
The 47-year-old driver of the motorcycle is in stable condition, while the 28-year-old passenger of the motorcycle is in critical condition. Both females remain in hospital. No other motorists were injured as a result of this collision.
Impairment and visibility issues (due to smoke in the air) were not considered factors in this collision, however speed is believed to have played a role.
Investigators from the EPS Traffic Section continue to investigate. No charges have been laid at this time.
