EPS Northeast Division Patrol officers responded to a report of car being stolen from its owner at gunpoint at approximately 10:50 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 11, 2014. It was reported that a 41-year-old driver was sitting in a Honda Civic at a north Edmonton mall parking lot, when allegedly approached by an adult male who pointed a handgun, and stole the car as well as the owner’s smart phone.
At approximately 11 a.m., EPS Patrol officers and Robbery detectives responded to a report of a robbery at gunpoint at a nearby financial institution. Shortly afterwards at approximately 11:30 a.m., there was another robbery at gunpoint reported at a different financial institution not far away. The suspect appeared to match the description of the car thief, and EPS flooded the area with resources to attempt to apprehend the suspect.
Two EPS Northeast Division CIS detectives identified the stolen vehicle driving in the area, and several EPS Northeast Division Patrol units were called in to conduct a vehicle stop. Officers arrested the lone occupant of the vehicle, and recovered property from all three robberies, including a replica firearm.
A 39-year-old male is currently in police custody and is facing numerous robbery and weapons charges.
