The Edmonton Police Service has charged two sworn members in relation to an alleged incident that took place on Sept. 4, 2012.
The charges were laid on Jan. 13, 2014, and follow an investigation by the EPS Professional Standards Branch that was subsequently reviewed by Alberta Justice. The charges stems from a complaint that the officers used excessive and unlawful force on an individual during an arrest.
Const. Barry Fairhurst, a nine-year EPS member; and Const. David Olsson, a two-year EPS member; have each been charged with assault pursuant to section 266 of the Criminal Code of Canada.
The constables are currently assigned to operational policing.
As the matter is currently before the courts, the EPS will not be commenting further.
