An EPS officer and three Community Peace Officers (CPO) were charged on July 20-22, 2020, in relation to a May 2018 incident.

Const. Darren Cave, an 18-year member with the EPS, as well as CPO Matthew Cromar and former CPOs David Marshall and Ryan Boyden are each charged with one count ofassault pursuant to Sec. 266 of the Criminal Code of Canada.

The charges stem from a May 26, 2018 incident, while the complainant was a prisoner in EPS Detainee Management Unit. EPS Professional Standards Branch was unable to make contact with the complainant until February 7, 2020, which contributed to the investigative timeline.

On June 19, 2020, following an in-depth investigation by the EPS Professional Standards Branch, Alberta Crown Prosecution Services recommended criminal charges be laid against all four individuals.

Const. Cave remains on active duty, and has been moved to an administrative role while the charges are before the courts. CPO Cromar remains employed by EPS; however, is no longer in Detainee Management Unit. Marshall and Boyden are no longer with the EPS.

As the matter is currently before the courts, the EPS is not able to provide further comment or information about the incident or investigation.
