Edmonton Police Service (EPS) officers contribute their key knowledge and collective dedication to serving nearly one million citizens daily. The EPS is encouraging those with a Canadian policing background to consider calling Edmonton their new home; bringing their experience and insights to serve the diverse communities of Edmonton. A growing need for Canadian police officers to join the EPS comes after a pause in hiring under the Experienced Officer Program (EOP) in 2018. The EOP launched in 2002, designed to add new, trained members to the Edmonton Police Service. Nearly twenty years later, the EPS has welcomed dozens of members from various police agencies across Canada.

Successful applicants can expect an eight-week accelerated training program before they are placed into a constable position within one of EPS’s six divisions.

“We recognize that some EOP’s may not require or benefit fully from participating in a regular recruit training class” said EPS Staff Sergeant Rocky Druar with Recruiting Section. “Comparatively, 91 new recruits were hired in 2021, and another 96 scheduled for 2022 are being paced through the standard 27-week training program, covering extensive fundamentals of in-class and practical scenario training.”

The minimum requirement to be considered an experienced officer is 18 months of continuous police service, inclusive of basic recruit training with a Canadian police agency including the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP).

In addition, the EPS is offering a transition credit, competitive salary, vacation and pension transfer options to successful applicants. EOP class #16 is scheduled to begin in June 2022 with up to ten positions available.

“The Recruit Selection Unit is excited to add these experienced officer positions to Edmonton,” says Druar. “Successful applicants can expect big city policing opportunities and lots of room to grow your career.”
