Fact Sheet: Edmonton Firearms Trends

In response to recent inquiries about gun violence in Edmonton, the Edmonton Police Service (EPS) is releasing data on firearms trends compiled by the EPS Firearms Investigation Unit.
  • In 2021, EPS seized 1,633 firearms, compared to 1,125 in 2020.
  • 119 of these firearms were seized from vehicles in 2021.
  • In 2021, there were 150 shooting occurrences in Edmonton, compared to 158 in 2020.

Shootings in Edmonton in 2020 and 2021 broken down by month:

 
  • Of these 150 shooting occurrences:
    • 108 (72%) are believed to have been “targeted events,” which means they do not appear to be random in nature.
    • 89 (59%) resulted in injuries or death.
    • 71 (47%) had gang involvement.
    • 69 (46%) had the potential for innocent bystanders to be harmed. This includes events where shots were fired in the air, in the direction of residences, vehicles, in public, etc.
      • In 7 of these occurrences, there were children present or in the vicinity.
  • 78 (52%) of all shooting occurrences occurred on the street.

Police are releasing videos of three unsolved brazen public shootings in the hopes that witnesses will come forward with tips:

On Nov. 8, 2020 at approximately 10:30 p.m., a man was driving on the Henday westbound approaching 91 Street when he was passed on both sides by a black Dodge Durango and what’s believed to be a silver Jeep Cherokee that exchanged gunfire. A short time later, the Durango turned up at the hospital with an injured male. His injuries were non-life-threatening.

On July 23, 2021 at approximately 8 p.m., two vehicles exchanged multiple rounds of gunfire in a residential neighbourhood in the area of Clareview Road and 132A Avenue. Two rounds went through nearby houses, several rounds were fired near a school, and one round nearly struck a witness. A child was playing nearby at the time of the shooting. No injuries were reported.

On Oct. 8, 2021 at approximately 8:20 p.m., the victim was sitting with his family at a restaurant in the area of 12 Ave and 101 St SW when a man approached the table from outside and shot through the window. The victim was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
