The Community Safety Data Portalwill offer access to comprehensive data including crime statistics and trends occurring in Edmonton. In response to the valuable feedback received concerning the limitations of the original crime map launched in 2009, EPS has developed a community safety mapping tool which provides more detailed information and greater functionality, to better serve the citizens of Edmonton.
The previous model, which employed the use of the eight crime indicators, was restricted and only captured approximately 15 percent of crime within the city. EPS has moved away from this model in order to provide a more encompassing view and measurement of crime data.
“Leveraging the continued modernization of EPS’ information systems, our Community Safety Data Portal is specifically designed to share fulsome calls for service and crime information to improve community awareness of policing activity and engage citizens in crime prevention strategies so that we can work in partnership to build safer communities,” says Sean Tout, Executive Director of Information Management & Intelligence.
Available on both desktop and mobile, the Community Safety Data Portal gives residents a glimpse of police activity in their neighbourhoods so that they may identify possible safety concerns.
EPS hopes the Community Safety Data Portal will encourage the public to take an active role in community safety and crime prevention.
“The Community Safety Data Portal was specifically designed in support of EPS’ vision of a forward-thinking police service that strengthens public trust by addressing crime, harm, and disorder,” adds Sean. “Our mission to be relentless on crime, and a leading partner in building community safety, starts with transparency and empowering our community with factual and timely community safety information”.
EPS invites citizens to explore the first version of the Community Safety Data Portal. This platform has been designed to grow in response to, and in partnership with, the ever-evolving needs of the community. We are actively seeking your feedback in order to continuously improve and enhance the information and applications in future iterations. Over the next year, more datasets will be added as they become available.
