On Wednesday, April 13, 2022, at approximately 7:00 p.m., two vehicles, a blue 2019 Chevrolet Camaro and an unidentified red car, were observed travelling at very high rates of speed eastbound on Whitemud Drive. As the vehicles approached the 53 Avenue off-ramp, the Camaro left the roadway and a collision occurred with a light pole which caused the Camaro to roll onto its roof.
The 22-year-old male driver of the Camaro sustained life-threatening-injuries and was transported by paramedics to hospital.
Major Collision Investigation Section responded to the scene and took over the investigation. Police are seeking additional witnesses and dash camera video which may have captured the collision and the other vehicle (described as a red car) which was involved.
“Speeds are unfortunately high on all of our main corridors in the city, but with spring in the air, the speeds our Traffic Services members have been seeing are flat out dangerous and are putting the public at risk,” said Inspector Keith Johnson of the EPS Traffic Services Branch. “This year we’ve already stopped and written almost 100 tickets to drivers who were driving 50+ km/h over the speed limit. In the last week alone, we issued a ticket to a driver doing 171 km/h in a 100 km/h zone and a motorcycle operator doing 166 km/h in a 100 km/h zone. All of our main traffic corridors, including the Whitemud, are a concern and we continue to enforce all traffic laws as part of our mandate to build community safety and reduce the frequency and severity of crashes.”
