The Edmonton Police Service (EPS) has charged a Devon, Alberta resident following a four-month firearm trafficking investigation.

In the late summer of 2021, a 23-year-old woman from Devon obtained a Possession and Acquisition License (PAL) and by fall 2021 had purchased numerous restricted firearms.

In December of 2021, the Saskatoon Police Service responded to a suspicious death investigation and recovered a firearm with its serial number defaced.  It was subsequently traced back to the woman, who had not reported it stolen at the time. The EPS was notified of the connection in April of 2022 when the analysis of the firearm was complete.

In April of 2022, the EPS Firearms investigation Unit (FIU) initiated an investigation into the possible firearms trafficking by the female. Shortly thereafter, the woman reported an alleged theft of her vehicle to the RCMP, claiming her registered firearms (restricted and non-restricted), along with ammunition were in her vehicle when it was stolen. Investigators subsequently suspected she had reported her vehicle stolen to conceal her trafficking activities.

In July 2022, the EPS Gang Suppression Team (GST) was conducting an unrelated criminal investigation when they also recovered a defaced firearm that was once registered to the woman. Recovery of this firearm furthered investigator’s belief that she was operating as a “Straw Buyer”; a term used to describe someone who uses a legitimate PAL to purchase firearms legally and then traffic/sell them illegally.

On Tuesday, August 16, 2022, the EPS Firearms Investigation Unit conducted a search warrant at the woman’s residence in Devon and recovered additional evidence to support that she was trafficking firearms. Photos of the firearms recovered in both the Saskatoon and Edmonton investigations are included below.

Amber Guy, 23, was subsequently arrested and charged with firearms trafficking (x5), possession for the purpose of firearm trafficking (x5) and making a false statement.
