Police charge two people in “grandparent scam”

The Edmonton Police Service (EPS) has arrested a man and a woman in relation to a scam targeting seniors in Edmonton.

On Tuesday, September 27, 2022, a 73-year-old female was contacted by someone posing as her son stating that he was involved in a serious collision and required a large sum of money. Shortly afterward, a male posing as a lawyer contacted the complainant and arranged to have funds collected. The following day, September 28, 2022, the complainant received another call requesting substantially more money.

Through police investigations, a male and female were identified and subsequently charged in relation to the incident.

Jacob Braithwaite, 30, was charged with fraud over $5000 (x2), and cause a child to be in need of protective services.

Salena Harris, 26, was charged with fraud over $5000 (x2) and cause a child to be in need of protective services.
