Of the total 1,588 traffic violations, 1,378 were related to speed. There were also 264 other Traffic Safety Act violations, including 24 hazardous (moving violations), 107 non-hazardous (equipment, document) violations, five Criminal Code (impaired, driving while disqualified) violations and 17 distracted driving violations.
In one instance, a male driving a 2010 Infinity QX56, was issued a ticket near 50 Street and 68 Avenue for distracted driving. The male subsequently became irate with the EPS members and conducted an illegal U-turn on the road in front of the officers while filming them. The accused then became extremely agitated and began to verbally abuse one officer. He also refused repeated instructions to provide identification, then attempted to leave the scene. As a result, Issa Abdallah, 38, was arrested and subsequently charged with obstructing a police officer.
In another incident during Operation 24 Hours, a male driving a 2011 Suzuki Grand Vitara was stopped for speeding and using a cell phone while operating a motor vehicle. Officers subsequently learned that the driver was operating a vehicle while suspended and was wanted for breach of conditions and four outstanding warrants.
The male was also found to be in possession of several bags of methamphetamine with an approximate street value of $920. Upon searching the vehicle, police also discovered a replica firearm and an extendable baton. It was also determined the male was driving under the impairment of drugs.
Llanes Dipa, 32, was facing several charges including criminal suspended driving, possession of a controlled substance, breach of weapons prohibition, possession of a weapon, impaired driving, warrants (x5) and breach of conditions (x4). The Edmonton Police Service and the City of Edmonton coordinate regular enforcement campaigns throughout the year (such as Operation 24 Hours) to improve traffic safety on Edmonton’s roadways.
