Human trafficking suspect sought on Canada-wide warrants arrested

Keyshawn McMillan who was wanted on Canada-wide warrants in connection to a human trafficking and intimate partner violence investigation has been arrested.

After receiving information that McMillan was residing in Burnaby, British Columbia, he was taken into custody by Burnaby RCMP on Tuesday, Dec. 27, 2022. He has since been transferred back to Edmonton and remains in Edmonton Police Service (EPS) custody.

McMillan was wanted by the EPS on Canada-wide warrants for charges that include human trafficking, forcible confinement, aggravated assault, uttering threats, assault with a weapon and multiple breach of conditions.

The EPS partnered with the Bolo Program to complement police efforts in locating McMillan.  The Bolo Program amplifies police requests for public assistance on most-wanted cases, focusing on the most serious criminal offences. In cooperation with the Crime Stoppers Association of Edmonton and Northern Alberta, the Bolo Program offered a reward up to $50,000 for any information leading to his arrest. This reward expired on June 9, 2022 and was not awarded in this case.

Background information

On March 9, 2021, police responded to the report of an assault with a weapon at a motel in the area of 151 Street and 111 Avenue. It was reported that McMillan violently assaulted a 19-year-old female. McMillan was arrested on scene and charged with assault with a weapon.

On August 9, 2021, another violent assault with a weapon reportedly took place at a different motel in the area of 168 Street and 118 Avenue involving McMillan and the same 19-year-old woman. McMillan seriously assaulted the woman, threatened her and forcefully confined her to the motel room. The woman was able to escape the room the following day on August 10, 2021. Upon further investigation, detectives learned that McMillan forced the female into the sex trade and trafficked her.

McMillan was subpoenaed to attend court on August 17, 2021, in relation to the assault on March 9, 2021, but he did not appear and was actively evading police until his recent arrest.
