At approximately 3 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 3, 2022, police responded to the report of a shooting in the area of 82 Avenue and 109 Street. A woman in her 20s sustained life-threatening injuries and was transported immediately to the hospital in a private vehicle.
While police were on scene conducting their investigation into the shooting, officers witnessed another shooting in which no one was injured. Police arrested the shooter on scene and charged him with 12 firearms-related offences, including assault with a weapon, discharge firearm with intent and possession of a firearm contrary to Prohibition Order.
The two incidents have since been determined to be unrelated.
The investigation into the first shooting led the EPS Firearms Investigation Unit to Halton, Ontario. On January 27, 2023, in coordination with EPS, Halton Regional Police Service executed a search warrant on a residence and a vehicle in Etobicoke, Ontario. During the search, Halton Police members seized a Glock handgun and other evidence to support the investigation, and arrested Khatar Mohamed Mussa, 33. He is facing charges of attempt murder while using a restricted firearm, possession of a loaded restricted or prohibited firearm and possession of a firearm knowing it to be unauthorized. He was remanded into custody in Edmonton on Friday, Feb. 3, 2023.
“This was a random act of violence that nearly killed an innocent woman who was out enjoying a long weekend with friends,” says Staff Sergeant Eric Stewart, of the EPS Guns and Gang Section. “It’s an example of a brazen public shooting where there were a number of witnesses, and we want to thank those who came forward.”
EPS would like to thank the Halton Regional Police Service for their cooperation in locating and arresting the accused, and the Alberta Sheriffs Branch for returning him to Edmonton to be brought before a Justice. As well, EPS is grateful to Chilliwack RCMP for their assistance with this investigation.
“Crimes of this nature shake a community’s sense of safety and well-being,” says Inspector Dave Costantini, Regional Investigative Services, Halton Regional Police Service. “The Halton Regional Police Service is pleased to have worked with our Edmonton Police Service partners to help investigate and bring the accused in this violent crime into custody and bring some measure of closure to those impacted.”
