The Edmonton Police Service (EPS) has charged a 23-year-old Edmonton man with one count of uttering threats in connection to a racist incident that occurred on the city’s LRT Wednesday morning.

At approximately, 8 a.m. Wednesday, April 5, 2023, Downtown Branch members responded to an uttering threats complaint at the Government Centre LRT station.

It was reported to police, that an adult male, unprovoked, approached two female passengers on the LRT train, then asked them if they were Japanese or Asian. It is alleged the male then began screaming at the two women threatening to kill them, before exiting the train at Corona Station.

The accused was located by EPS members with the assistance of ETS security at the Corona Station and arrested without incident. Jacob Henderson, 23, of Edmonton, was charged with one count of uttering threats.

Downtown Branch investigators, in consultation with the EPS Hate Crimes and Violent Extremism Unit (HCVEU), are
recommending that Section 718.2 of the Criminal Code of Canada be applied in this case, allowing the courts to consider increased sentencing when there is evidence the offence was motivated by hatred.
