Additional charges laid against spiritual community leader

The Edmonton Police Service (EPS) has laid additional charges against a local self-appointed spiritual leader.

On Jun. 7, 2023, Johannes (John) de Ruiter, 63, was charged with three additional counts of sexual assault in relation to three separate incidents occurring between 2012 and 2019. Leigh Ann de Ruiter, 64, was also jointly charged with two additional counts of sexual assault involving two of the same incidents.

John de Ruiter is a self-styled spiritual leader of a group known as the College of Integrated Philosophy or the Oasis Group, which operated out of the Oasis Building at 109 Avenue and 177 Street from 2007 to 2021. The two accused are spouses.

Investigators believe there may be additional complainants, and are encouraging them to come forward. Anyone who believes they have been victimized by either of the two accused is asked to contact the EPS at 780-423-4567or #377 from a mobile phone. Background

Johannes (John) de Ruiter was previously arrested and charged on Jan. 21, 2023 with sexually assaulting four complainants in separate incidents occurring between 2017 and 2020. Leigh Ann de Ruiterwas previously arrested and charged on Mar. 13, 2023 with three counts of sexual assault in relation to three of the incidents occurring between 2017 and 2020.
