On June 25, 2023, at approximately 3 a.m., Northeast Branch patrol officers responded to a collision call on the Capilano Bridge on Wayne Gretzky Drive. A 2007 Dodge Ram was travelling northbound in the southbound lanes of Wayne Gretzky Drive at a high rate of speed.
The Ram truck narrowly missed colliding with an EPS patrol vehicle that was southbound at the time. The truck then immediately struck a 2011 Audi Q5 that was travelling behind the patrol car.
The 21-year-old female passenger of the Audi was pronounced deceased on scene by paramedics, while the 31-year-old driver of the Audi was treated and transported to hospital by paramedics in critical condition.
Paramedics also treated and transported the 23-year-old male suspect driver of the Ram truck to hospital in critical condition. His passenger, a 21-year-old female, was also taken to hospital with what appear to be serious, non-life-threatening injuries.
Speed and impairment are factors in the collision.
EPS Major Collision Investigations Section has since taken over the investigation. The northbound lanes of the Capilano Bridge are now open to oncoming traffic. The southbound lanes are expected to be re-opened at approximately 10:30 a.m. this morning.
