Speeding continues to be an issue on our city streets. During the 24-hour period, EPS Patrol officers noted a vehicle travelling two times over the posted speed limit. The vehicle was travelling at a rate of 117 km/h in a 60 km zone in the area of 101 Street and 97 Avenue.
“Spring-like weather does not give drivers permission to speed,” says Acting Sgt. Richard Windover with Major Collision Investigation, EPS Traffic Section. “Collisions are preventable. Each and every driver has a responsibility to drive safe to ensure our community stays safe as well.”
In the 24-hour period of the enforcement campaign starting at 7 a.m. on Thursday, Apr. 24, 2014, EPS officers issued 2,226 speeding violations, compared to 1,146 on Wednesday, March 12, 2014, when the last 24-hour enforcement event took place. There were 496 other violations including seatbelt infractions, distracted driving, traffic safety violations, and criminal code violations.
In total for officer and automated enforcement, there were approximately 2,722 tickets issued for the April 2014 Operation 24 Hours compared to 2,069 for March 2014 Operation 24 Hours.
The Edmonton Police Service and the City of Edmonton Office of Traffic Safety coordinate many educational and enforcement initiatives such as Operation 24 Hours throughout the year to improve traffic safety on the city’s streets.
