“It’s an unfortunate reality,” says EPS Constable Ryan May from the Downtown Neighbouhood Empowerment Team (N.E.T.). “Parking lots are such a target-rich environment, and when people don’t lock their car doors, they make it so easy for thieves.”
Reported thefts from vehicles in 2013 accounted for 31 per cent of all crime city-wide, and we know from experience that many incidents go unreported. Although Northlands had only three reported incidents of theft from vehicles during K-Days in 2013, they still encourage guests to lock their vehicles and remove all valuables.
That is why EPS, N.E.T. and Northlands have teamed up for K-Days this year to remind the public to lock their vehicle doors. Fifty thousand pamphlets with prevention tips will be passed out by parking attendants at Northlands over the next week, and a social media campaign is underway to help get the message out.
“We’re asking that people take a quick couple of minutes to remove any valuables from their vehicle before they leave home, and make sure their car doors are locked and windows up after they park,” says Constable May. “It could save you a lot of time and money, and who wants to end a great day at the Midway as a victim of crime?”
