As the weekend approaches, police are warning the public about a new scam. The scam takes advantage of the generosity of Edmontonians who want to help southern Alberta flood victims.

Last weekend, the perpetrators set up a table at an area mall and offered mall patrons a box of Krispy Kreme donuts for a $5 donation. The scammers do not take cash, only credit and debit cards. The card number and information are then skimmed. Armed with the card number and the pin number to the card, the perpetrators defraud the individuals of thousands of dollars.

“We would like to caution Edmontonians to be aware of making donations. They need to ensure they are donating to legitimate organizations,” explains EPS Acting Sgt. Mike Walkom. “Be aware of people who will not accept cash or request that you use multiple cards for payment. If the public comes across anyone accepting donations who seems suspicious, we are asking them to contact police immediately to report this behavior.”

Investigators are seeking a person of interest in this case. Anyone who recognizes the individual in the photo below is asked to contact police.

Female, between 20-40 years of age

blond or light brown hair

fair skinned

thin to medium build

Police continue to investigate this case and encourage anyone who fell victim to this scam to contact police at 780-423-4567or #377 from a mobile phone.  Anonymous information can be submitted to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or online at www.tipsubmit.com/start.htm.
