The Edmonton Police Service Robbery Section has charged a suspect in connection with a violent crime spree that took place across north and west Edmonton last week.

At approximately 1:32 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 1, 2014, EPS Northeast Division Patrol officers responded to an assault complaint from a house in the area of 118 Avenue and 60 Street.  It was reported that an adult male entered the residence and assaulted and stabbed a 23-year-old male resident before fleeing with the male’s wallet.  The incident did not appear to be random.  EMS attended and treated the male’s non-life-threatening injuries.

On Saturday, Aug. 2, 2014, West Division Patrol officers responded to a report of a robbery at a bank ATM at the retail mall in the area of Groat Road and 111 Avenue at approximately 11:50 a.m.  A 74-year-old male who was using a bank machine was assaulted and robbed by an adult male.  The elderly man suffered minor injuries that required treatment by EMS.  Witnesses reported seeing the suspect enter a waiting taxi cab and leave the scene.

Shortly afterwards on the same day at approximately 12:21 p.m., Northeast Division Patrol officers responded to reports of a commercial robbery at a convenience store located at 131 Avenue and 66 Street.  An adult male matching the same description as the ATM robbery suspect assaulted a 34-year-old female clerk at the store, stole some money and lottery tickets, and fled the scene in a waiting taxi.  The clerk suffered minor injuries and was treated by EMS before being released.  The suspect was reported to have taken the taxi cab to a casino at 131 Avenue and Fort Road, where he got into another cab.

Police learned that the suspect had taken taxi cabs to and from the robbery incidents on Saturday, and were able to determine the direction he was headed.  At approximately 1 p.m., EPS and RCMP units converged on the cab on Cranford Way in Sherwood Park.  The male fled the cab, but was apprehended without incident.  Police were able to recover the stolen property at that time.

“The excellent on-scene investigative work by West and Northeast Division officers, and the assistance of numerous witnesses, helped to link the incidents together and identify a suspect,” says Acting Staff Sgt. Mark Hilton with the EPS Robbery Section.  “Thankfully, the suspect was intercepted with the assistance of the Sherwood Park RCMP.”

Shawn Allen Lundgren, 32, has been charged with aggravated assault, robbery (x3), possession of stolen property (x2), possession of stolen credit cards (x2), and being unlawfully at large.  Lundgren was on Statutory Release from July 18, 2014, however, when he failed to return to his designated community residential facility, a warrant was issued for his arrest on Aug. 1, 2014.  The accused has been remanded and will appear in court on Aug. 19, 2014.

Anyone with information regarding these incidents is asked to contact the Edmonton Police Service at 780-423-4567or #377 from a mobile phone.  Anonymous information can be submitted to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or online at www.tipsubmit.com/start.htm.
