The Queen Alexandra Neighbourhood Empowerment Team (N.E.T.), along with Homeward Trust, the City of Edmonton and Edmonton Police Service, is hosting an event for homeless youth in our city.

"Our 2012 Homeless Count found 279 youth under the age of 18 without a home," said Susan McGee, CEO of Homeward Trust. “We know that many homeless youth are often ‘hidden’—couch surfing or in other short term situations—and that number could be higher. Supporting youth experiencing homelessness requires services focused on their specific needs. Events like this bring those services together, and reflect the collaboration necessary if we are to end youth homelessness."

Youth Connect 2014 will bring 25 youth-serving agencies together to help youth with everything from housing to haircuts. Street hockey, free food and music will round out the occasion with some fun.

“This event will give youth a chance to access a variety of services and connect with supports right in the heart of where they spend of a great deal of their time,” says Lane Gagnon, youth liaison with the Queen Alexandra N.E.T. team. “Lack of support leaves homeless youth vulnerable to victimization and increases the likelihood of criminal behaviour.”

A media availability will be held Thursday, September 25th from 1:00 p.m. – 3:30 p.m. at the Armoury Resource Centre (10310-85 Avenue).
