Suspicious death in west Edmonton deemed homicide

The Edmonton Police Service has confirmed the suspicious death over the weekend of Philip Mooney, 58, as the 23rd homicide of 2014.

The Edmonton Medical Examiner cannot release the cause of death until toxicology results are known.

Homicide detectives continue to investigate. No charges have been laid and police are not looking for any other suspects at this time.

The City of Edmonton had 24 homicides at this time in 2013.

Background

The Edmonton Police Service is investigating a suspicious death that occurred over the weekend.

On Saturday, Dec. 6, 2014 at approximately 11 p.m. West Division patrol officers responded to a call for service regarding an intoxicated male at a residence in the area of 122 Avenue and 188 Street. Upon arrival, officers found an unresponsive male. EMS treated and transported the male to hospital where he was pronounced deceased.

Investigations reveal that an altercation took place in the residence between the intoxicated male and another male who were known to each other. A male suspect was interviewed by police and released in the morning on Sunday, Dec. 7, 2014.

An autopsy is scheduled to take place today, Monday, Dec.8, 2014.   

Police are not looking for any other suspects at this time.  

The investigation continues.
