Pedestrian struck on Whyte Avenue passes away in hospital

A male pedestrian has succumbed to injuries after being struck by a vehicle while attempting to cross Whyte Avenue on Thursday, Jan. 1, 2015.

It was reported that at approximately 6 p.m. on Jan. 1, 2015, a 63-year-old male attempted to cross Whyte Avenue at 101 Street in a marked crosswalk. The pedestrian was allegedly struck by a Dodge pick-up truck travelling eastbound on Whyte Avenue.

The pedestrian was treated and transported to hospital, where he passed away.

The incident is still under investigation by the Edmonton Police Service Major Collision Investigation Unit. Charges have not been laid. 

Background:
Edmonton Police Service Southwest Division patrol officers responded to the report of a collision at approximately 5:52 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 1, 2015, after it was reported that a white Dodge pick-up truck struck another vehicle from behind while travelling eastbound on 63 Avenue.

The driver of the pick-up truck is alleged to have fled the scene of that hit-and-run collision, before travelling north on Gateway Blvd. with the complainant following. The driver of the suspect vehicle then continued eastbound on Whyte Avenue, where it was reported that the male suspect driver then struck a 63-year-old male pedestrian who was crossing Whyte Avenue at 101 Street.

The male pedestrian was taken to hospital in critical condition. The male suspect was taken into custody.

The Edmonton Police Service Major Collision Investigations Unit continues to investigate.
