Homicide detectives continue to search for Richard Joseph Lacarte, who is wanted in connection with the 2014 murder of Demetrios Karahalios.

Karahalios, 48, was found deceased inside an Oliver neighbourhood residence on March 8, 2014. Due to the ongoing investigation, the cause of death has not been released.

“There have been numerous tips and possible sightings of Mr. Lacarte from across the country, since we issued a Canada-wide warrant for his arrest on second-degree murder last June,” said Det. John Tedeschini, of the EPS Homicide Section.

“To date, however, none of these tips have produced any tangible leads. Obviously, the fact the accused remains at large is a source of concern for investigators, not to mention the emotional toll it continues to take on the Karahalios’ family and his friends.

Friends of Karahalios are holding a vigil in memory of Demetrios on Sunday, March 15, 2015, at 7 p.m. in Peace Garden Park, 103 Avenue and 120 Street, near the location where Karahalios was killed. The vigil, said organizer Jimmy Dexter, is open to the public.

“Everyone is welcome to join us to help keep the memory of this wonderful man alive,” said Dexter. “We all want the same thing - closure. There’s a void in our community. Demetrios didn’t deserve this fate. He was a man with a huge heart, who wouldn’t hurt a soul, and his memory deserves justice and nothing less.”

Lacarte, 48, who was known to Karahalios, led a “drifter lifestyle” and has been known to work in the roofing industry on occasion.

He is described as being a Caucasian male, 5’9” tall and 150 pounds. He has blue eyes and grey hair and is missing some teeth. Lacarte has tattoos that include Harley Davidson wings on his left bicep, a skull and crossbones and a tiger (see photos below).

Given the length of time that has lapsed since Karahalios’ murder, EPS Homicide investigators are concerned Lacarte may have assumed a new identity.

The public is asked to immediately contact the Edmonton Police Service should they come in to contact with Lacarte, but do not approach him. Tips can be submitted by contacting EPS at 780-423-4567or #377 from a mobile phone. Anonymous information can be submitted to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or online at www.tipsubmit.com/start.htm
