Acting Chief Simpson will purchase the food with an EPS service coin, and accept contracts from the community. These contracts symbolize the turning over of all leavened food.
When Passover ends Rabbi Kliel will return to headquarters on Monday, April 13 to buy the food back by making a donation to the Edmonton Police Foundation with funds donated by the community.
The EPS service coin is a symbol of pride and affiliation. The front of the coin bears the EPS heraldic crest and motto, ‘Dedicated to Protect, Proud to Serve.’ The reverse has images of an EPS police vehicle and helicopter (in black and white) with the Edmonton skyline in the background.
The highly coveted coins are presented to members of various organizations as a source of pride and camaraderie. It is believed that such coins were introduced by military units in World War I.
