March has been a hot month for thieves targeting the Jackson Heights area.

The Edmonton Police Service wants to remind all citizens to lock their car doors and remove all valuables after a significant spike in property crime reported in southeast Edmonton. There have been 12 reports of crime within 16 days in the neighbourhood, when statistically, a maximum of five incidents of crime have been reported in a month over the past two years.

“This is a crime of opportunity for thieves,” explains Acting Sgt. Pritpaul Bhui with Southeast Division. “Unlocked vehicles, spare keys hidden in the vehicle and valuables left in plain view are all too appealing for criminals to target.”

Between March 14 and March 31, 2015, there have been:

  • 5 theft from vehicles
  • 4 theft of vehicles
  • 3 break and enter

Three of the vehicles targeted were unlocked and two had spare keys within the vehicle.

It appears the vehicles have been targeted overnight, while all of the residential break and enter incidents have occurred during the daytime between the hours of 8 a.m. and 3:30 p.m.

Police are still investigating these occurrences however there are not clear indicators that are linked to all of these events. There are no suspects at this time.

“If the rate of crime continues, this would equate to more than 300% increase of crime in the area,” says Acting Sgt. Bhui. “Citizens are urged to report suspicious persons and vehicles in the area to police.”

Acting Sgt. Bhui suggests the following crime prevention tips:

  • Do not leave your vehicle running.
  • Do not leave spare keys hidden in your vehicle.
  • Do not leave items in your vehicle.
  • Lock your vehicle.
  • Use a steering wheel locking device (e.g. The Club).
  • Install an alarm
