Charges upgraded in 2016 aggravated assault leading to death of infant

A 2016 case involving the death of a two-month-old baby girl is currently before the Courts.

On July 27, 2016, Brandon Calahoo, now age22 was arrested and initially charged with aggravated assault after EPS Child Protection Section became involved in an investigation related to a two-month-old female infant who was admitted to hospital with serious injuries.

On August 8, 2016, the infant succumbed to her injuries, and EPS Homicide Section became involved in the investigation.

The Edmonton Medical Examiner completed an autopsy on the infant, but was not immediately able to make a determination about the cause of death. In January 2017, the Medical Examiner confirmed that the cause of death was criminal, at which time the Crown Prosecutor was notified, and upgraded the charges against Calahoo to second degree murder and failing to provide the necessaries of life.

The case is currently before the Courts.

Due to the unusual circumstances of this investigation and the long delay between initial charges and upgraded charges, a media release was not issued in January 2017 when charges were upgraded by the Crown. This homicide is included in the 42 homicides that occurred in 2016.

While operating his taxi cab in the area of 120 Street and 130 Avenue just before 8 p.m., the accused allegedly attacked the driver multiple times with an edged weapon.

Two male citizens walking in the area witnessed the attack and came to the aid of the cab driver. Together, the two citizens removed the suspect male from the taxi cab and, along with the driver, held him at the scene of the altercation until police arrived a short time later.

EMS responded, treated and transported the male cab driver to hospital with non-life threatening injuries. He has since been released.

“This attack was completely random and unprovoked,” says Acting Staff Sgt. Kevin Brookes “The two citizens who assisted undoubtedly prevented further, serious injuries to the cab driver and likely saved his life.”

Officers continue to investigate.

Brady Alook, 19, has been remanded and is charged with attempted murder, aggravated assault, uttering threats, possession of a weapon, possession of narcotics, fare by fraud, breach of recognizance (x2) and several outstanding warrants.
