Woman succumbs to injuries after being struck by truck

The EPS Traffic Section is investigating a collision which occurred early this morning and claimed the life of a 23-year-old woman.

At approximately 8:45 a.m. today, Tuesday, Sept. 18, 2018, Northeast Division Patrol officers were called to the area of 66 Street and 137 Avenue on the report of a collision. Upon arrival, officers located an unresponsive female who had been struck by a Dodge Ram. The woman was treated by EMS, but succumbed to her injuries on scene.

 

Investigators believe the driver of the Dodge Ram, a 73-year-old male, was exiting a gas station on the west side of the 66 Street and 137 Avenue intersection, in an attempt to turn southbound on 66 Street, when he allegedly struck the female pedestrian walking northbound on the sidewalk. Police believe the driver was looking north, while in the process of merging into southbound traffic when the woman was struck.

 

The EPS Major Collision Investigation Section continues to investigate. Speed and impairment are not considered factors in this collision.

 

Charges are pending against the 73-year-old driver of the Dodge Ram.



Police investigate death of male after assault at downtown bar

The Edmonton Police Service’s Homicide Section is investigating the death of a male that occurred over the weekend after he was assaulted at a bar in downtown Edmonton.

At approximately 1:30 a.m. on Saturday Sept. 8, 2018, Downtown Division patrol responded to a report of an assault of a 74-year-old Asian male at the Central Social Hall located at 109 Street and Jasper Avenue.

When officers arrived, they located the 74-year-old injured male. The male was treated and transported by EMS to the hospital with injuries that did not appear to be life-threatening at the time. The male died in hospital as a result of his injuries on Saturday, Sept. 15, 2018.

An autopsy was performed today, Tuesday, Sept. 18, 2018, and the manner of death was determined to be a homicide. The cause of death is not being released at this time.

Police are seeking any assistance from patrons or employees that were present at the Central Social Hall during the late evening of Friday, Sept. 7, 2018 into the early morning hours of Saturday, Sept. 8, 2018 who may have witnessed the assault or events leading up to it.

Homicide detectives continue to investigate. No further details are available at this time.

Investigators are urging anyone with information about this event to contact the EPS at 780-423-4567 or #377 from a mobile phone.

Every file is evaluated on a case by case basis. The EPS has decided not to release the name of the deceased as it does not serve an investigative purpose.

Police investigating early-morning explosion at bank

The Edmonton Police Service is investigating an incident involving an improvised explosive device (IED) being detonated inside a vestibule at a financial institution in southwest Edmonton early Wednesday morning.

Southwest Division patrol members responded to a 911 call for assistance from security guard personnel at a bank near 27 Avenue and 141 Street in the neighbourhood of Chappelle Gardens, at approximately 1:40 a.m. today, Wednesday, Sept. 19, 2018.

It was reported to police that guard personnel had just arrived at the bank to perform their regular duties, when a loud bang startled guards inside the vestibule.

Paramedics eventually treated and transported them to hospital for precautionary reasons only.

No money was taken during the incident. Robbery Section detectives continue to investigate.

Police lay charges in vehicle part fraud

The Edmonton Police Service has charged a 60-year-old Edmonton man for defrauding several Edmonton businesses.

Between November 2017 and April 2018, police received more than 10 reports of fraud from Edmonton businesses that sold vehicle parts and electrical goods.

Following a thorough investigation, detectives determined that two male suspects used stolen credit card information to purchase more than $250, 000 worth of goods from the businesses.

"This fraud operation appears well planned and cost several businesses a great deal of time and money," says Det. Nigel Phillips with the EPS West Division Criminal Investigation Section.

"If there are other businesses that sell similar goods who believe they may have been defrauded, we encourage them to contact us."

On Sunday, Sept. 9, 2018, Peter Philip Cardinal, 60, was arrested and charged with fraud over $5,000(x5), fraud under $5,000 (x2), uttering a forged document and an unrelated outstanding criminal warrant.

Investigators are actively working to locate the second suspect.

Police investigating pedestrian, LRT collision

Please be advised, that the male pedestrian has since succumbed to his injuries in hospital this evening.As previously noted, this incident has been deemed non-criminal in nature.All roadways in the area around 82 Street and 112 Avenue have since been re-opened to vehicular and pedestrian traffic.

Motorists and pedestrians are advised to avoid the LRT Station at 82 Street and 112 Avenue, as a result of a collision between an LRT train and a pedestrian.

A male has since been treated and transported to hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Although the investigation is its preliminary stages, the incident appears to be non-criminal in nature. As such, no further details will be forthcoming, at this time.

Major Collision Investigation Section is now on scene, and has since closed 82 Street to oncoming vehicular and pedestrian traffic, between 112 and 114 Avenue, until further notice.

TRAP team catches stolen vehicle that previously fled police

The Edmonton Police Service’s Tactical Response to Auto-theft Prevention (TRAP) team laid several charges this week after its members located a stolen vehicle that had been involved in a criminal flight earlier the same day.

On Wednesday evening, Sept. 19, 2018, in the area of 95 Street and 111 Avenue, the TRAP team located a 2006 Ford F350 that had been reported stolen on Monday.

 

Upon further investigation, officers determined the stolen vehicle had been involved in a criminal flight earlier that day in Southeast Division.

Officers eventually surrounded the vehicle in the area of 43 Street and 118 Avenue and arrested a female passenger. Themale driver was apprehended with the assistance of EPS Canine Unit after a short foot pursuit.

 

Upon arrest, the male was found to be in possession of a small quantity of suspected methamphetamine. The female was found to possess a collapsible baton and canister of bear spray. A search of the vehicle also revealed a sawed-off rifle and two large machetes.

 

Richard Metcalf, 24, is charged with possession of stolen property over $5,000, unauthorized possession of firearm in motor vehicle, unauthorized possession of a firearm, possession of a weapon dangerous to the public (x2), possession of a controlled substance, and breach of recognizance (x3).

 

Caitlin Dvorak, 21, is charged with possession of a weapon dangerous to the public (x2) and had two outstanding warrants in connection with an assault.



The TRAP team is a specialized unit that specifically addresses city-wide theft of motor vehicles, thereby focusing on the reduction of crime and victimization, while increasing public safety. TRAP launched in March 2017, and between March and December 2017, the team recovered 221 stolen vehicles, made 187 arrests and laid 931 charges. In 2018 to date, TRAP has recovered 185 vehicles worth more than $3.5 million, made 183 arrests, laid 817 charges and recovered 40 weapons.

The Edmonton Police Service is asking for the public’s help locating a missing 24-year-old woman.

Paige Nelson, 24, is from Edmonton but was last seen around noon on Wednesday, Sept. 12, 2018 in Calgary near the Co-op grocery store in the Forest Lawn/Radisson Heights neighbourhood. She was last heard from in the early morning hours of Thursday, Sept. 13, 2018, and is still believed to be in Calgary.

 

Nelson is described as a Caucasian female with blue eyes and brown hair. She is approximately 5’8” tall, and 130 lbs.

Investigators charge 22-year-old male in connection to assault at downtown bar

The EPS Homicide Section has arrested and charged a 22-year-old male in connection to the assault leading to the death of a 74-year-old male last week.

Mohamed Ahmed Sassi, 22, was taken into custody without incident this morning (Friday, Sept. 21, 2018) in Edmonton.  

Sassi has since been charged with manslaughter.

 

“With any investigation, the cooperation of witnesses is the single biggest factor in police being able to successfully close any case,” says Det. Kurt Martin with EPS Homicide Section. “It is because of the courage of the witnesses who came forward that we were able to get some resolution for the victim’s family.”

EDGE Section arrests four, lays 23 charges

The Edmonton Drug and Gang (EDGE) Section has laid 23 charges after a months-long drug trafficking investigation.

In March of 2018, EDGE Section initiated an investigation into suspected drug trafficking activities of an Edmonton man. Throughout the investigation, three other suspects and four addresses were also identified as being part of the operation. On September 20, EDGE members concluded the investigation and executed search warrants at two addresses in Windermere, one address in MacEwan, one address in the Davies Industrial area and one vehicle.

 

Various drugs were seized during the execution of the search warrants, including 3,783 pills believed to be an analog of fentanyl disguised as Xanax pills.

 

“Police continue to find fentanyl and its analogs in various forms, including illicit pills designed to look like prescription medication,” says Staff Sgt. Pierre Blais, with EPS EDGE Section. “People who use street drugs must understand that they may not be ingesting what they think they are, which could lead to serious harm or even death.”

The following persons have been charged:

Angelino Angeles, 25, is charged with:

  • Possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking (x8)

  • Simple possession of a controlled substance (x2)

  • Possession of the proceeds of crime under $5,000

Gezelle Mendoza, 26, Chiiming Diep, 24, and Vernon Schwehr, 27, are all charged with:

  • Possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking (x3)

Chiiming Diep is additionally charged with:

  • Simple possession of a controlled substance (x2)

  • Possession of the proceeds of crime over $5,000

 

Total drugs seized from the warrants:

  • 3,783 pills believed to be an analog of fentanyl disguised as Xanax pills (approximate street value of $151,320)

  • 915 g of Ketamine (approximate street value of $29,250)

  • 355g MDMA (approximate street value of $20,000)

  • 201g Cocaine ( approximate street value of $12,000)

  • 375g Phenacetin (approximate street value of $1,000)

  • Drug packaging and paraphernalia

     

Total cash seized from the warrants:

  • $12,600 – Canadian currency

 

Police investigate assault on ETS driver

The Edmonton Police Service is investigating a serious assault on an ETS driver which occurred early this morning.

At approximately 3:40 a.m. today, Wednesday, Sept. 26, 2018, Southeast Division patrol officers responded to the Mill Woods Transit Centre on Hewes Way on the report of an assault.

 

Upon arrival, officers located a 65-year-old male ETS bus driver who had sustained multiple injuries. The driver was treated and transported to hospital by EMS where he remains in serious, but non-life-threatening condition.

 

Police arrested a 15-year-old male on scene; however no charges have been laid at this time.

 

The investigation continues. 


Public information and warning: Violent offender released

In the interest of public safety, the Edmonton Police Service is issuing the following warning; Michael Rhoads is a convicted violent and sexual offender, and the Edmonton Police Service has reasonable grounds to believe he will commit another violent offence against someone while in the community.
Rhoads will be residing in the Edmonton area.  The Edmonton Police Service is seeking a recognizance order on Rhoads and he will be monitored by the Behavioural Assessment Unit of the Edmonton Police Service.
 
Rhoads has a history of violence towards intimate partners and strangers he has encountered on the street or in bars.  His risk for violence increases significantly when under the influence of alcohol and drugs.
 
Rhoads has been placed on a series of court ordered conditions, including:
 
  • Must abide by a curfew of 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. daily
  • Must not purchase, possess or consume any alcohol or illicit drugs, including cannabis, any prescription drugs not prescribed to him, or any other intoxicating substances.
  • Must not be in any licensed premises other than a dining room for the sole purpose of having a meal. Must not attend any liquor store.
  • Must not possess any drug paraphernalia such as crack or marijuana pipes, self-made pipes of any kind, e cigarettes, bongs, water pipes, cigarette papers, or syringes.
  • Must not travel out of the City of Edmonton without written approval.
  • Must not be in possession of weapons of any kind, including knives (except in his residence or at a restaurant for the sole purpose of consuming a meal), bear spray or dog spray, firearms, ammunition, explosive material, or any weapons, whether homemade or otherwise.
  • Must not enter into a dating, intimate, or sexual relationship with any person or any friendships with females until her identity has been disclosed to a supervisor or designate and she has been informed of his previous offending.

Charges laid in assault on ETS driver

The Edmonton Police Service has laid charges against a youth following a serious assault on an ETS driver yesterday morning.

A 15-year-old male is charged with attempted murder, aggravated assault, possession of an offensive weapon dangerous to the public and theft of a motor vehicle in relation to this incident.

 

The youth cannot be named under the Youth Criminal Justice Act.

 

No further information is available for release.

EDGE Section arrests seven, lays 36 charges

The Edmonton Drug and Gang (EDGE) Section has laid 36 charges in relation to a drug trafficking ring.
In August of 2018, EDGE Section concluded a seven-month investigation into a group of people suspected of trafficking drugs between Edmonton, Calgary and British Columbia. On August 2, 2018, EDGE members executed search warrants at two addresses in the Griesbach and Hollick-Kenyon areas.   
 
Various drugs were seized during the execution of the search warrants, including 394 grams of purple-coloured fentanyl with an estimated street value of $98,000. 
 
“Drug dealers have been known to use various dyes and buffing agents to create different coloured drugs to appeal to consumers,” says Staff Sgt. Pierre Blais, with EPS EDGE Section. “When you use street drugs, you never know what’s in them or how potent they are, and this can lead to serious harm or death.”

Police lay charge in fatal pedestrian collision

The Edmonton Police Service Traffic Section has charged a 73-year-old male driver in relation to a fatal pedestrian collision that took place last week.

On Thursday, Sept. 27, 2018, William Nahayowski, 73, was issued an appearance notice for careless driving and is expected to appear in court on Nov. 21, 2018.

Background

Police seek assistance identifying suspect in random aggravated assault

The Edmonton Police Service is releasing a composite sketch to help identify a suspect in an alleged aggravated assault that occurred in August. 
On Friday, Aug. 3, 2018, at approximately 11:30 a.m., police responded to a report of a 47-year-old male who was seriously injured in an assault that occurred inside a grocery store in the area of 118 Avenue and 66 Street. 
 
It was reported that an Indigenous male in his 30s and the complainant first interacted while riding the #8 bus at approximately 10:30 a.m., when the suspect repeatedly asked the complainant for cigarettes, despite being asked to leave the complainant alone. 
 
The suspect then allegedly followed the complainant off the bus into a store in the area of 118 Avenue and 66 Street, where the suspect struck the complainant in the face, then fled the scene. The complainant suffered serious injuries to his face.

The suspect is described as an Indigenous male with short black hair, brown eyes, approximately 5’10” tall with a slim build. He is believed to be in his 30s and was reportedly wearing a white t-shirt and gray pants. 

ASIRT investigating fatality in relation to criminal flight

At approximately 9:50 p.m. yesterday evening, Sunday, Sept. 30, 2018, Downtown Division officers witnessed a black Dodge Ram driving in an erratic manner.

As a result of the truck’s unsafe driving patterns, officers followed the truck westbound onto Jasper Avenue from 90 Street and attempted to conduct a vehicle stop. The suspect vehicle did not comply and entered into a criminal flight. The truck then allegedly began driving at a high rate of speed to evade police, running a red light at the 92 Street and Jasper Avenue intersection. The truck then continued westbound and collided with a light pole at Alex Taylor Road.

 

The 27-year-old male driver succumbed to his injuries on scene, while a 21-year-old female passenger was treated and transported to hospital by EMS with serious, but non-life-threatening injuries.

 

The EPS will not be providing further comment as the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) has since taken the lead in this investigation.


Police investigate early morning fatal collision

The EPS Traffic Section is investigating an early morning fatal collision on Anthony Henday Drive.

At approximately 5:15 a.m. today, Monday, Oct. 1, 2018, police responded to a collision on Anthony Henday Drive at 17 Street, after a car reportedly struck a moose.

 

Police believe the car, occupied by a 52-year-old male driver and a 52-year-old female passenger at the time, was travelling westbound on Anthony Henday Drive when it collided with a moose.

 

The male driver succumbed to his injuries on scene and the female passenger was treated and transported to hospital by EMS with non-life-threatening injuries.

 

Neither speed nor alcohol are considered factors in this collision.
