The Edmonton Police Service has received numerous reports of fraudsters posing as astrologers and psychic readers.

It was reported that some persons were lead to believe they were cursed with black magic and/or witchcraft.

In a recent investigation, an Edmontonian was convinced into paying up to $ 100,000 in cash and gold to have black magic removed from their life and to have access more money.

“It is difficult to track these alleged fraudsters,” explains Det. Glen Haneman with Southeast Division. “Often, these individuals quickly disappear when they believe they could be caught.”

These fraudsters typically use fake names and target vulnerable people by promising resolution to their personal problem and leave business cards or pamphlets on parked vehicles.

Examples of astrology and psychic fraud:

  • Unrealistic promises to solve personal and financial problems.

  • Request for a small amount of money upfront for performing healing rituals.

  • Gain your confidence and present a plan requiring thousands of dollars as offerings (for prayers, chain of rituals etc.).

  • Claim to remove “black magic and/or witchcraft.”

Police investigating male impersonating police officer

The Edmonton Police Service is investigating a male who is accused of impersonating a police officer on social media.

Southeast Division became aware of suspicious social media accounts where a male was identifying himself as a law enforcement officer in May 2017.

On Friday, June 2, 2017, Southeast Division officers conducted a search warrant on a residence in the area of 30 Street and 22 Avenue. Police recovered a large amount of police equipment, uniforms, paraphernalia, electronics and identification documents.

Imran Hamid Khan, 24, was charged with personation of a peace officer (x5) and breach of recognizance (x5).

Khan is alleged to pose on social media as “Taylor Kayden” claiming he is a Staff Sergeant for the ERT Tactical Squad with the RCMP.

“Having a person pose as a police officer is disconcerting,” says Staff Sgt. James Matsune with Southeast Division Criminal Investigation Section. “Collecting law enforcement memorabilia can be a fun hobby, but it is absolutely inappropriate to portray yourself as a police officer and convince others you are as well.”

Police believe Khan introduces himself as a figure of authority, participates in car enthusiasts chat forums and meet-up groups.  Police are still working to determine whether he wore a uniform in public.

Khan is believed to have created his own tactical unit called, “Strategic Incident Response Deployment Teams.” He may be creating his own law enforcement uniforms including shoulder flashes.

Shoulder flash allegedly created by Khan

“We believe Khan was posing as an officer and trying to recruit others and providing other law enforcement advice,” says Staff Sgt. Mastune.

Edmontonians are invited to help celebrate the June 20, 1892 creation of the Edmonton Police Service.

Chief Rod Knecht, Councillor Scott McKeen and members and supporters of the EPS will come to City Hall to celebrate this occasion together with the EPS Honour Guard, the Pipes & Drums of the Edmonton Police Service and members of the EPS Historic Unit. Historic police uniforms will be on display in City Hall, and vintage police vehicles will be parked in the north breezeway. Later that evening, the High Level Bridge will be lit red and blue in honour of the landmark anniversary.

“Our police service got its start through a town council bylaw,” says Chief Rod Knecht. “So it’s fitting that we celebrate our official birthday at City Hall, a place that symbolizes the strong and positive relationship we have with our community.”

The official anniversary at City Hall is one of the many public activities planned to celebrate the EPS’ 125th anniversary in 2017, which include serving as Parade Marshal in the K-Days Parade on July 21 and a picnic at Borden Park on August 20.

EPS was created 125 years ago when Mayor Matthew McCauley issued Bylaw #15 on June 20, 1892, which allowed the municipality to appoint town constables to keep the peace.  Since that time, EPS officers have been dedicated to protect, and proud to serve, the citizens of Edmonton.  For more information on the history of the EPS, visit the website.

Edmonton Police Service officers and City of Edmonton automated enforcement handed out 3,889 traffic violations last week during Operation 24 Hours.

During the 24-hour enforcement period from Thursday, June 15, to Friday, June 16, 2017, there were 3,277 speeding tickets issued by EPS officers and automated enforcement. The male driver, who had 21 outstanding criminal warrants, was subsequently arrested and charged for several offences, including criminal flight and dangerous driving.
