During the 24-hour campaign on Tuesday, Apr. 19, 2016, a total of 2,608 speeding tickets were issued by EPS officers and automated enforcement. Traffic Safety Act violations such as seatbelt infractions accounted for 321 of the total, and officers issued 11 charges for Criminal Code offences.
These numbers are up from the Operation 24 Hours enforcement blitzes held in February and March 2016, when 2,295 and 2,363 violations were issued, respectively.
Officers stopped a number of excessive speeders during the traffic safety campaign, including a motorcycle travelling 108 km/h in a 50 km/h zone across the Low Level Bridge during the early afternoon. Four additional vehicles were recorded travelling more than 50 km/h over the posted speed limit in the area of Anthony Henday Drive and Manning Drive.
The Edmonton Police Service and the City of Edmonton coordinate regular enforcement campaigns throughout the year, such as Operation 24 Hours, to improve traffic safety on Edmonton’s roadways.
