Edmonton Police Service officers and City of Edmonton automated enforcement handed out 3,319 traffic violations this week during Operation 24 Hours.

During the 24-hour enforcement period from Wednesday, Apr. 5, to Thursday, Apr. 6, 2017, there were 2,861 speeding tickets issued by EPS officers and automated enforcement. Other Traffic Safety Act violations, including distracted driving, accounted for 453 of the total violations issued. There were also 5 Criminal Code offences.

While conducting speed enforcement in the area of Gateway Blvd and 71 Avenue, officers were approached by a witness who reported seeing a man leaving the back door of an automotive business carrying two tires. The tire thief lost traction a short time later when he was located and arrested by officers.

Downtown Division members conducted a vehicle stop and located a male driver who was wanted by the Abbottsford Police for breach of recognizance. The driver and passenger were also arrested for a total of 12 other outstanding warrants.

The Edmonton Police Service and the City of Edmonton coordinate regular enforcement campaigns throughout the year (such as Operation 24 Hours) to improve traffic safety on Edmonton’s roadways.
