Operation 24-Hours ran from 7 a.m. Friday, Nov. 8, 2013 to 7 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 9, 2013 and resulted in police officers issuing a total of 2,108 tickets which includes 1,519 tickets for speeding.
On Friday, Nov. 8, 2013, police observed a Nissan Maxima travelling at 149 km/h in a 70 km/h zone on Yellowhead Trail and 97 Street. Police did not engage in a criminal flight, however, Air-1 assisted ground units and followed the suspect vehicle into a parking lot in the area of 118 Avenue and 170 Street where the driver was arrested for impaired operation of a motor vehicle.Breath samples provided found the driver intoxicated were well over the legal limit of .08mg%.
”Although Operation 24-Hours focuses on speeding violations, police continue to enforce other traffic safety act violations,” says Staff Sgt. Randy Loxterkamp, with Traffic Section.
On Friday, Nov. 8, 2013, members from the Strategic Traffic Apprehension Team (STAT) observed a driver of a grey Toyota Rav 4 travelling westbound on 118 Avenue driving while distracted as she was flossing her teeth. As members approached the vehicle a second time, the driver was brushing her teeth with an electric toothbrush.
Operation 24-Hours is one of the EPS Traffic Section’s enforcement initiatives that take place throughout the year to improve traffic safety in the city.
