Justin Handbury turns himself into police in connection to deadly hit and run

The suspect sought in relation to a deadly hit and run over the weekend, turned himself in to the Strathcona County RCMP detachment around 7:30 p.m. last night.

The Edmonton Police Service Homicide Section issued a warrant on Tuesday, May 23, 2017 for the arrest of Justin Handbury, 31, in relation to death of an 18-year-old male on Monday, May 22, 2017. The deceased male was allegedly struck by a Ford F150 truck following an altercation in the city’s west end. The man succumbed to his injuries in hospital a short time later.

 

The Edmonton Medical Examiner conducted an autopsy yesterday, Wednesday, May 24, 2017, and the cause of death was deemed blunt craniocervical spine trauma. The manner of death is homicide.

 

The truck involved in this incident has since been recovered near Wetaskiwin, Alberta and investigators have determined it was stolen.

 

Handbury is charged with second degree murder, attempt to commit murder, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing bodily harm, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing death, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, possession of stolen property over $5,000, failing to stop at the scene of an accident (x2) and breach of recognizance (x3).

 

Police believe the accused and deceased were known to one another and do not believe this was a random act.  

 

Homicide Section continues to investigate.
