The Edmonton Police Service is cautioning motorists travelling on city streets today to employ defensive driving skills, on the heels of the city’s first major snow fall of the 2013-14 winter season.

Between 8 a.m. and noon today, Saturday, Nov. 16, 2013, the Edmonton Police Service have responded to:

  • 36 calls for property damage collisions
  • 2 calls for injury collisions
  • 6 calls for hit and run collisions

The EPS is recommending drivers give themselves additional time to get to their destinations today, as city streets remain slick, following an estimated 10cm of snowfall over the last 12 hours.

Winter driving tips to follow:

  • If you can avoid travelling in poor conditions, please do so.
  • Slow down and brake gradually when approaching curves and while stopping.
  • Allow extra following and stopping distances in poor road conditions.
  • When turning left, give yourself more time to make the turn and further distances for oncoming traffic.
  • Bridge decks can become slippery, so use caution in those areas.
Check road conditions if considering going out of town or travelling on highways.
