Charges laid in southeast Edmonton shooting

The Edmonton Police Service Homicide Section has charged a man in connection with a shooting death at a southeast Edmonton home.

It was reported to police that there was an alleged argument between two residents of the basement suite prior to the shooting.

Police have identified the victim of the shooting as Nicholas Kyriacou, 23, who succumbed to his injuries and died in hospital.  An autopsy will be scheduled.

Mohamed Hassan Sheikh Ahmed, 28, has been charged with manslaughter with a firearm, unauthorized possession of a firearm, possession of a firearm contrary to a prohibition order, and fail to comply with a probation order.  The accused has been remanded.

Background:
Police responded to a report that a gunshot was heard at a residence in the area of 25 Avenue and 46 A Street at approximately 3:59 a.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 27, 2013.  A 23-year-old male was found suffering from what appeared to be a gunshot wound, and EMS treated and transported the male to hospital in critical condition.  EPS Southeast Division officers investigated and were assisted by EPS Homicide Section detectives.  Residents of the home and neighbours were interviewed to determine what occurred.  The 23-year-old male passed away in hospital later that day.
