At approximately 10:45 p.m. yesterday, Sunday, Aug. 19, 2018, police received numerous reports of gunfire in the area of 162 Avenue and 51 Street. Upon arrival, Northeast Division officers located a deceased male inside a vehicle who appeared to have sustained multiple gunshot wounds.

A possible grey or silver Nissan Sentra occupied by multiple individuals was witnessed leaving the scene following the shooting. No suspects are in custody at this time.

“We do not believe this was a random attack,” says Staff Sgt. Bill Clark of the EPS Homicide Section. “We are looking to speak with anyone who has information about the suspect vehicle and its occupants.”

Investigators have identified the deceased as Abdi Latif Hirsi, 27, and are releasing his name to encourage anyone with information to contact police. An autopsy has been scheduled for tomorrow, Tuesday, Aug. 21, 2018.

The EPS Homicide Section and Edmonton Drug and Gang Enforcement (EDGE) Unit continues to investigate.

Every file is evaluated on a case by case basis. The EPS has decided to release the name of the deceased as it serves an investigative purpose.
