Police investigate death of male after assault at downtown bar

The Edmonton Police Service’s Homicide Section is investigating the death of a male that occurred over the weekend after he was assaulted at a bar in downtown Edmonton.

At approximately 1:30 a.m. on Saturday Sept. 8, 2018, Downtown Division patrol responded to a report of an assault of a 74-year-old Asian male at the Central Social Hall located at 109 Street and Jasper Avenue.

When officers arrived, they located the 74-year-old injured male. The male was treated and transported by EMS to the hospital with injuries that did not appear to be life-threatening at the time. The male died in hospital as a result of his injuries on Saturday, Sept. 15, 2018.

An autopsy was performed today, Tuesday, Sept. 18, 2018, and the manner of death was determined to be a homicide. The cause of death is not being released at this time.

Police are seeking any assistance from patrons or employees that were present at the Central Social Hall during the late evening of Friday, Sept. 7, 2018 into the early morning hours of Saturday, Sept. 8, 2018 who may have witnessed the assault or events leading up to it.

Homicide detectives continue to investigate. No further details are available at this time.

Investigators are urging anyone with information about this event to contact the EPS at 780-423-4567 or #377 from a mobile phone.

Every file is evaluated on a case by case basis. The EPS has decided not to release the name of the deceased as it does not serve an investigative purpose.
