Police investigating early-morning explosion at bank

The Edmonton Police Service is investigating an incident involving an improvised explosive device (IED) being detonated inside a vestibule at a financial institution in southwest Edmonton early Wednesday morning.

Southwest Division patrol members responded to a 911 call for assistance from security guard personnel at a bank near 27 Avenue and 141 Street in the neighbourhood of Chappelle Gardens, at approximately 1:40 a.m. today, Wednesday, Sept. 19, 2018.

It was reported to police that guard personnel had just arrived at the bank to perform their regular duties, when a loud bang startled guards inside the vestibule.

Paramedics eventually treated and transported them to hospital for precautionary reasons only.

No money was taken during the incident. Robbery Section detectives continue to investigate.
