Transition areas for the Light Rail Transit System (LRT) will be the main focus for the December Community Action Team (CAT) deployment this week.

Led by the Edmonton Police Service (EPS), the CAT initiative is a unified, focused, high-visibility policing concept, with an organized mobile police unit created for maximum contact, enforcement and education.

The EPS, Edmonton Transit System security and numerous social service agencies will be joining the EPS in patrolling the LRT transition areas, otherwise known as the three "P"s - pedways, platforms and parkades - as part of the ongoing EPS Violence Reduction Strategy.

“It involves a unified team approach, and will include officers riding the LRT, patrolling the stations, platforms and surrounding lots,” said Sgt. Darren Wasmuth of Downtown Division. “Officers will be on foot and utilizing Segway vehicles in the underground pedway system.”

CAT brings an increase of police and other civic resources to target crime and disorder. Social agencies will also assist with connecting vulnerable persons to needed services such as housing and addiction counselling.

The CAT deployments are highly visible and mobile, and have been successful in quickly addressing a wide range of criminal and social issues.

Media are invited to joinEPS officers for a chance to discuss and witness first-hand how CAT works within the community. Mayor Iveson and Police Commission Chair Shami Sandhu will also be available for comment.
