The Edmonton Police Service has arrested and charged three men and one woman with more than 25 charges in relation to a fentanyl trafficking investigation.

In February 2021, members of the Edmonton Drug and Gang Enforcement (EDGE) Section became aware of a fentanyl trafficker operating in Edmonton. The trafficker was identified as Prabhjeet Chaniana, 25, who was confirmed to be selling fentanyl in the Edmonton region.

Through the course of the investigation, police identified Gurkamal Parmar, 24, from Beaumont, AB, Kulwinder Singh, 27, from Calgary, AB and Guneet Brar, 24, from Edmonton as Chaniana’s associates.

Throughout the week of August 30, 2021, a series of search warrants were executed with the assistance of RCMP and Calgary Police Service at addresses and vehicles associated with the accused in Edmonton, Beaumont and Calgary. During the search warrants, police located: 43 grams of cocaine with a street value of approximately $3,500; 65 grams of fentanyl with a street value of approximately $12,000; and 505 grams of crack cocaine with a street value of approximately $40,000. Police also found ammunition, prohibited high-capacity magazines and cash proceeds of crime, as well as three vehicles equipped with sophisticated hidden compartments, two of which contained handguns with laser sights and serial numbers removed.

Drugs and firearms seized during investigation

On Nov. 23, 2021, Parmar and Chaniana turned themselves in to police. Brar turned herself in to police on Nov 29, 2021 and on Dec. 7, 2021 Singh turned himself in to Calgary Police.

Prabhjeet Chaniana, 25, is charged with 10 drug-related charges, including trafficking a controlled substance, two firearms related charges, and one charge of proceeds of crimeunder $5,000.

Gurkamal Parmar, 24, faces two drug-related charges and three firearms charges.

Kulwinder Singh, 27, is charged with two drug-related charges, six firearms charges, one charge of proceeds of crime under $5,000, and one charge of breaching conditions of his release.

Guneet Brar, 24, is charged with one drug-related charge.

“This investigation highlights the dangers associated with the drug trade, both from the standpoint of the lethal substances being sold on our streets and the dangers presented by those who choose to engage in this activity,” says Staff Sergeant David Paton, of the EPS EDGE Section. “This investigation also highlights EDGE’s commitment to targeting these individuals and working collaboratively with our partner agencies to improve safety throughout our province.”
