At approximately 11:40 a.m. on Saturday, Mar. 12, 2022, Northwest Division officers responded to the report of an assault with a weapon in the area of 113 Avenue and 95A Street. It was reported that the male suspect approached the 73-year-old male complainant, who was out for a walk, and tapped him on the shoulder. The suspect then reportedly struck the complainant in the face without provocation, knocking him to the ground, then slashed him across the face and neck with a boxcutter. The suspect fled after a witness shouted at him.
Police located the suspect a short time later at 118 Avenue and 103 Street and arrested him without incident. Braden Arcand, 26, is charged with attempted murder, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose and failure to comply with probation.
Witnesses and police provided first aid to the 73-year-old man on scene until EMS arrived and treated and transported him to the hospital with serious injuries. He has since been released from hospital.
The two men are not known to one another.
