After multiple tips from the public, Abdi was taken into custody by the Wood Buffalo RCMP on Tuesday, April 5, 2022, in Fort McMurray, AB.

The EPS would like to thank the Wood Buffalo RCMP, the media and the public for their assistance in locating Abdi.

Background

On Saturday, June 5, 2021 at approximately 4:10 p.m., Downtown Branch patrol officers responded to a weapons complaint in an alley near 106 Avenue and 96 Street. It was reported to police that two males exchanged gun fire in an alley before one fled the area in a vehicle and the other on foot. Two of the rounds struck bystanders, a male and a female, who were also in the alley at the time.

EMS responded, treated and transported the 44-year-old male bystander to hospital with serious, life-threatening injuries. The 20-year-old female bystander was also treated and transported to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Both have since been discharged from hospital.

Following an investigation, officers identified the male in the vehicle to be Idris Abdi, 34, and a search warrant was executed on his vehicle and at his residence on Tuesday, July 6, 2021. Abdi was taken into custody at that time and a handgun, pepper spray, drugs and a variety of drug paraphernalia were located. He was subsequently charged with multiple firearm and drug-related offences.

In March 2022, after further forensic and ballistic investigations were completed, it was determined that the handgun located at Abdi’s residence was one of the weapons used during the June 2021 shooting. As a result, several province-wide warrants were issued for his arrest, including discharging a firearm with intent, careless use of a firearm, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, unauthorized possession of a weapon, unauthorized firearm in a motor vehicle and possession of a restricted/prohibited loaded firearm.Canada-wide warrants were also being sought and a media release seeking the public’s assistance locating Abdi was issued.

The other male suspect remains unknown at this time.
