At approximately 11:30 p.m. on Nov. 3, 2022, Edmonton Police Service members received the report of a break and enter in progress at a business in the area of 104 Street and Jasper Avenue.
When Downtown Branch police officers arrived on scene, they observed a male who appeared to be intoxicated in the area of the business where the break and enter was reported, travelling unsafely across Jasper Avenue. Officers arrested the male, who resisted. Officers placed him in the back of a prisoner transport and called for EMS assistance.
A short time later, the male began to lose consciousness. Officers removed the male from the back of the vehicle, removed the handcuffs and provided emergency medical assistance. EMS arrived and treated and transported the male to the hospital, where he was pronounced deceased at 12:21 a.m.
The Director of Law Enforcement was notified of the incident and has directed the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) to investigate. The EPS will be cooperating fully with the ASIRT investigation and will not be able to provide any additional information to the public at this time.
