On Friday, May 5, 2023, at approximately 4:52 p.m., officers responded to a weapons complaint outside of Crawford Plains School (42 Street and 12 Avenue). It was reported to police that an unknown male attacked and stabbed two people before fleeing the area on foot.
Upon arrival, responding officers located a deceased 35-year-old woman and an injured 11-year-old child. Officers immediately commenced life-saving efforts on the child, who was then transported to hospital by EMS. Sadly, the child succumbed to their injuries.
A male matching the description of the suspect was located a short time later by two other responding officers in the area of 46 Street and 12 Avenue. An altercation took place and both officers subsequently discharged their firearms, striking the suspect. The male sustained critical injuries and was treated and transported to hospital by paramedics where he remains.
EPS Homicide Section is now investigating the suspicious deaths of the woman and child and autopsies have been tentatively scheduled for Monday, May 8 and Tuesday, May 9, 2023.
Investigators have confirmed the deceased are mother and child; however, it is not clear whether the suspect was known to them. The responding officers were not physically injured.
The Director of Law Enforcement was notified of the incident and has directed ASIRT to investigate. As such, the Edmonton Police Service cannot provide any additional information at this time. All further media inquiries should be directed to ASIRT.
